Finding titles in that sweet spot between simple picture books and challenging chapter books can be tough!
Mystery Behind the Doors by Demetra Yuvanu is a fantastic option for readers bridging the gap.
It’s full of riddles and mystery to hold kids’ attention, and it promotes confidence and self-discovery for pre-teens.
The adventure begins when Haris encounters a magical woman in his dream. Her hair is full of peacock feathers, and she describes magical portals and hidden gifts.
Soon, she appears to his friends as well, and the kids are set on a quest to find out the mystery hidden in the worlds behind three hanging doors.
Readers will join them on their puzzle-filled journey.
As they work to figure out the secrets hidden by the doors, they are continually prompted to follow the advice of the wise dream woman, “BeJoWiLo.” She tells Haris, “Don’t forget, you have a choice. You can choose to change your focus. You can put it on what you want, and take it away from what you don’t want.”
This lesson certainly applies to the tweens reading the tale, too! Reminding growing children that they have the power of choice and initiative can alter the path of their lives.
Written for readers ages 8-12, the book makes use of an innovative font called “Dyslexie,” created to ease reading comprehension for people with dyslexia.
Anything that can support struggling readers is a huge plus for me! The puzzles embedded in the story will also encourage reluctant readers to persevere.
Besides the thoughtful choice of font, I especially loved the pictures in this book. Middle-grade novels don’t always come with illustrations, but these are truly beautiful, and add so much to the story.
Rich, colorful, and textured, they help enhance the mystical vibe of the book. What a great find!
